Terror Suspect To Be Extradited From UK To US

British judges have approved the extradition of a mentally ill terrorism suspect to the US.

The decision by the High Court means Haroon Aswat can face trial on conspiracy charges in New York.

Aswat is wanted for allegedly conspiring with convicted terrorist Abu Hamza to establish a jihadi training camp in Oregon a decade ago.

A European court ruled last year he could not be extradited because of his mental condition.

Aswat, who was born in 1974, has been treated in a secure psychiatric hospital for paranoid schizophrenia.

The British judges had sought assurances from US officials that Aswat would still receive treatment for his condition, if he was extradited.

Two judges said they were satisfied with the US response.

The decision was welcomed by the Home Office, whose plans to extradite the suspect were put on hold while the judges sought the assurances over Aswat's treatment.

"We are pleased the court has upheld the Home Secretary's decision to extradite Haroon Aswat to the United States," said a Home Office spokesman.

However, the case could still be heard on appeal by the Supreme Court.

Meanwhile, arrangements for the extradition will go ahead, the spokesman said.

Hamza, known for his fiery sermons at London's Finsbury Park Mosque, was extradited from Britain to America nearly two years ago.

He was convicted in New York in May of terrorism charges, and has yet to be sentenced.
