Tesco has cut the price of its top of the range, non-drop Christmas trees by half with a large Nordmann Fir now at £15 for Clubcard holders. The trees are among the most popular at Christmas because they are non-drop and on average cost around £50-£60 each at garden centres and from roadside sellers. The Tesco Nordmann Fir trees on sale this year will be 160-190cm tall.

The supermarket has also halved the price of its Potted Nordmann Fir trees which sit in an 11 litre pot and are 80-110cm high. They are on sale for £12.50. There’s a third choice for shoppers of a Finest range Christmas tree which sits in a wicker basket and includes lights. These are also on sale for half price at £15.

According to Forestry England, the nation’s largest land manager, Nordmann Fir are the UK’s most popular Christmas trees in Europe because of their strong branches and even shape which ‘make them a joy to decorate’. Tesco Christmas tree buyer Victoria l’Anson said: “We wanted to bring shoppers some early Christmas cheer by offering these fantastic full size, non-drop Nordmann Fir trees at a fantastic price.

“Tesco has in recent years seen demand for Christmas trees start as early as the last Saturday in November. The trend is now so pronounced and widespread across the whole of the UK that we refer to it as Christmas Tree Saturday. The good news for shoppers buying early is that our Christmas trees are guaranteed to last across the festive season.”

The Nordmann Fir trees are grown for the supermarket by Europe’s largest Christmas tree wholesalers, Needlefresh, based in Foxhill, near Swindon in Wiltshire. The company, which has a team of dedicated growers across the UK, sells 800,000 pot-grown trees every year.

Tesco is also selling ‘grow your own Christmas tree’ kits for £2 that are aimed at encouraging youngsters to learn and appreciate nature and growing in general. The kits include Norwegian Spruce seeds and a peat-free coir block that expands intro soil. The kit can be grown indoors from December till late spring and planted outdoors in spring/summer.

All Christmas tree half price sales run until 12 December.
