Tesco and Sainsbury's shoppers urged to look for 'secret code' which gets them money off
Tesco and Sainsbury’s ‘secret codes’ have been revealed and they could help you save cash on your weekly shop. Which? took to social media to help users decipher the often overlooked numbers in the fine print of supermarket labels.
Which? revealed that these codes actually tell you when a promotional offer is set to expire, allowing shoppers to stock up on discounts or deals. Which? shared on Instagram: "When we spot a tempting promotion, our impulse is to snap it up in case the offer ends soon. But it's easy to check exactly when Tesco Clubcard Prices will finish: the date an offer ends is written backwards in smallprint on the shelf label. If it says '241001', that offer will end on 1 October.
" Sainsbury's Nectar Prices shelf labels reveal the start date of the promotion in small print, hinting at its duration - offers typically last two weeks and conclude on Tuesdays. Even if an offer is ending soon, our research has found that a lot of products regularly go back on offer again and again, so it's best to only buy the item if you were already planning to do so."

The expert heads straight to Tesco's aisles, focusing on product labelling. Tesco's Clubcard deals and savings are marked with a yellow sticker displaying the discounted price. They said: "They put it backwards so it can be a little tricky to spot, but the first digits, the 25, means the year, the middle is the month and the last two are the date."
They said: "Look closer. This is the secret code that tells you when something is going to end on promotion at Tesco." Which? explained: "While other supermarkets like Sainsbury's only show when the date that a promotion started, though Sainsbury's typically end their deals on Tuesdays, so that can give you a pretty good estimate of the end date."
