Tesco has warned customers over a 30-day rule and said: "Unfortunately." The warning relates to receipts and was issued by Tesco, which is rivalled by Sainsbury's, Morrisons, Asda, Lidl, Aldi and more, via its Twitter - or now X -page.

The customer got in touch over X saying: "Placed an order online, was told by customer service to get VAT receipt at superstore, went to Hove superstore, they said their systems to do not allow for VAT to be printed/emailed on online orders."

In reply, Tesco wrote back a response and said: "Unfortunately, the VAT receipt can only be issued by the store within 30 days of purchase. The VAT receipt can be issued by the colleague at the customer service desk of a Tesco Extra/Super store."

"Our colleagues will be able to arrange for a VAT invoice to be completed while you wait," it said. "If you're a non-EU resident and you'd like to claim the VAT back on your purchase, please visit a customer service desk (large stores only) and we'll arrange for the relevant VAT receipt to be completed while you wait."

On its website, Tesco says: "If you are unable to find your receipt and you used your Clubcard with your purchase, we can search for your transaction in your Clubcard account for up to 100 days after your purchase. Then we can offer you a refund without needing your receipt."

The FAQ section from the UK's largest retailer goes on to advise shoppers: "If you've changed your mind about your product, can't find your receipt and didn't use your Clubcard with your purchase, we will offer to exchange the product for another product of the same value, based on the current price when scanned. The product must be returned as new.

"This doesn't affect your legal rights."
