Tesla unveils new Roadster in surprise ceremony

Last night, American electric car brand Tesla told the world it was going to unveil an electric lorry, which it did – but the firm then surprised the world by unveiling an all-new Roadster.

While the original Tesla Roadster was a very limited-run vehicle based on the Lotus Elise, the new model will be completely new underneath. As you might expect from Tesla, it's no slouch – in fact, the company claims it will be the quickest production car in the world.

The 0-60mph sprint will be dealt with in 1.9 seconds, while 0-100mph is dispatched in just 4.2 seconds. Those are truly bonkers acceleration figures – faster than just about anything we've ever seen before, including hypercars like the Bugatti Chiron.

Top speed hasn't been specified, but Tesla boss Elon Musk says it will be 'around 250mph' – not record breaking, but not exactly slow. Musk told press at the unveiling event: "These numbers sound unreal, but they're not."

Power comes courtesy of a 200kWh battery pack – twice the capacity of the Model S – and three electric motors. Tesla's not released any power figures, but claims an astonishing 10,000Nm of torque at the wheels. The massive battery pack means a 620-mile range – the longest on any electric car we've seen yet.

Of course, the Roadster is not yet a production reality. The interior is futuristic in every sense, with a big central touchscreen and very few physical controls – but we'd expect to see a conventional steering wheel replace the aircraft-style apparatus currently in place.

Those wanting a spot on the waiting list for the Tesla Roadster can reserve their place for a $50,000 (£38,000) deposit – the eventual selling price will be $200,000 (£151,000). Those wanting a bit more exclusivity can opt for one of 1,000 'Founders Series' models – but they'll cost you a full $250,000, paid upfront.
