A Texas woman has grown her incredibly long fingernails for 23 years to set a new Guinness World Record.

Nail artist Ayanna Williams has smashed the record for the longest fingernails on a pair of hands (female) - an incredible 576.4cm (18 ft.10.9 in).

As a bonus, the 60-year-old’s long fingernails means she can’t do any washing up, despite regular applications of nail hardener and a thin layer of acrylic.

She has to clean them daily with anti-bacterial soap and a nail brush.

Ms Williams explains her fingernails don’t cause her too many problems on a day-to-day basis, but she admits pulling on clothes can sometimes be difficult.

Guinness World Records Editor-in-Chief Craig Glenday said: “We might have been inspired this year by fictional superheroes, but the focus for this edition is celebrating the planet's real-life superheroes, who come in all shapes and sizes.

“We believe that everyone has a superpower that’s waiting to be discovered, and our search for the latest record-breaking talent has brought us into contact with some truly superhuman characters.

“Beyond these wonder women and super men, you’ll also find an awe-inspiring roster of record-breakers, from talented pets and remarkable feats of engineering to amazing wonders from the natural world and every significant sporting achievement of the past year.”

Guinness World Records 2018 is out now.
