Texas-style bar opens in Middlesbrough complete with line dancing - and 'best parmos' bold claim
A Texas-style bar has opened in Middlesbrough complete with line dancing, a singing cowboy and a bold claim that "you won't find a better parmo".
The Honky Tonk Bar & Grill has reformed the old Ayresome Park Pub on Albert Road, near Middlesbrough Train Station, and it's now open for business. It's taken on 25 staff, and the brainchild of entrepreneurs Glenn Bartlett and Michael Kitson, who have other firms on Teesside.
After years of visiting the USA to research and refine their concept, the team has brought an authentic American honky tonk experience to Teesside.
Glenn said: "We saw the need for a venue that offers more than just food and drink. The positive feedback has been incredible, and we're now looking at expanding across the North."
The Honky Tonk Bar & Grill will feature live music from its in-house honky tonk band, Roo'N Toot'N, guest appearances from a range of artists and tribute acts and even a singing cowboy. Guests can enjoy cowboy karaoke and free beginners' line dancing lessons. The venue also offers Sky Sports coverage on 12 large screens.
Michael said: "We've spent years visiting America, from Texas to Tennessee, learning what makes a true honky tonk special. With country music being one of the most popular genres in the UK, the timing couldn't be better for a venue like this."
General manager Kel Allen said: "The free pool, shuffleboard, and table football have had a great response, especially from families over the summer, where kids ate free and are welcome at the premises until 8pm. We are also super excited about our new barn dance brunch and cocktail menus, launching this week."
The venue's menu is the creation of Ben Azadi, who became a fan favorite during lockdown, winning the titles of 'Lockdown’s Best Parmo ' and 'Lockdown’s Best Takeaway' for his work at The Village Bar and Grill on Linthorpe Road. Since then, Ben has spent time honing his skills in Texas and Louisiana, bringing authentic Southern flavors to Middlesbrough.
He said: "We've brought the tastes of the deep South to Teesside. From fried chicken to loaded mac and cheeses and flame-grilled meats, our menu is packed with bold, authentic flavors. And for Teessiders, you won't find a better parmo – a bold statement, but we're ready to prove it."
