TGI Fridays operator in adminstration with 87 restaurants at risk
The UK operator of TGI Fridays has gone into administration as the hospitality firm scrambles to sell its chain of 87 restaurants across the country. Hostmore said it had appointed administrators from Teneo after plans to buy the US restaurant chain collapsed earlier this month.
The company is in the process of trying to sell the UK restaurants to new owners, which it hopes to complete by the end of September. This would keep the TGI Fridays brand alive on British high streets, although it is not clear at this stage whether some or all of the restaurants are likely to find a buyer.
The American-inspired restaurant chain continues to stay open as normal while the administration process starts. TGI Fridays was founded by Alan Stillman in New York City in 1965.
The first location opened on 63rd Street and First Avenue. Originally, Stillman’s vision was to create a bar and restaurant where single young professionals could socialise, which was something relatively new at the time. His goal was to capitalise on the growing social scene in the Upper East Side neighborhood of Manhattan.
The concept of TGI Fridays was an instant hit. It introduced several novel ideas for the time, such as the idea of "ladies' night" to attract female customers, which helped it gain a reputation as a hotspot for singles. The restaurant featured a lively and energetic environment with friendly servers, striped uniforms, and a casual feel that made it a welcoming spot for people looking for good food and social interaction.
After the success of the first restaurant, TGI Fridays expanded rapidly in the U.S. and began franchising its concept. By the 1970s and 1980s, it had become a popular chain with locations across the country. The franchise model allowed it to grow internationally, and by the late 1980s, TGI Fridays had opened restaurants in various countries around the world.
TGI Fridays' menu is a blend of American classics like burgers, steaks, ribs, and appetisers like mozzarella sticks, nachos, and their famous "Loaded Potato Skins." It has also been a pioneer in offering a wide variety of cocktails and beverages, such as its signature Long Island Iced Tea.
Over the years, like many large chains, TGI Fridays faced challenges from new competitors and shifting dining trends. In recent years, the brand has undertaken various efforts to modernise its menu, update its decor, and introduce new services like delivery and online ordering to remain competitive.
