There's a lack of story information surrounding Avengers 4 – we don't even know the title yet! – but a new Marvel novel telling Thanos' origin story could provide a clue about potential new villains for the superhero sequel.

Before we continue, it must be stressed that there is a huge caveat to this, and that is: the novel Thanos: Titan Consumed, although based on Avengers: Infinity War, is not canon.

"The book has no canonical ties to the MCU," the publisher told io9 earlier this year.

That said – one part in the novel, via ScreenRant, is intriguing.

Near the end, Thanos and a character known as the Lorespeaker engage in conversation, and Thanos asks why nobody has tried to collect and wield the power of the Infinity Stones. Below is the excerpt from the book covering the Lorespeaker's reply:

"They are hidden, Thanos," the Lorespeaker said, as though badgering a child, "because they are too powerful. And because the Celestials and the others, the ones whom the Celestials fear, keep close watch on the Stones from afar."

Remember, the novel isn't canon. However, it's curious that it mentions the Celestials – MCU fans will know that Ego from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was one. This is pure speculation, but is there a chance they could come into play for Avengers 4?

And who are "the ones whom the Celestials fear"?

Avengers 4 arrives in cinemas in the UK on April 26, 2019, and in the US on May 3, 2019. Avengers: Infinity War is out now on Blu-ray, DVD and digital download.
