The Apprentice: Who Got Fired By Lord Sugar In Task Four?

Another week, another simple-sounding task that gets The Apprentice candidates in a right ol’ spin.

This week saw the candidates attending the London Pet Show, tasked with picking three items and selling as many as they could.

The task where candidates are supposed to schmooze clients in an attempt to convince them THEY are the right people to sell their products - although sadly, Brett Butler-Smythe didn’t seem to get the memo.

If you don’t want to know who was in the doghouse with Lord Sugar, look away now:

Yep, Ruth Whiteley and her technicolour dreamcoat sadly got fired by Lord Sugar after failing to sell a single cat tower.

Lord Sugar mixed up the teams again for the task, with David Stevenson heading up Team Versatile and Scott Saunders taking control of Team Connexus.

Each team had to choose two ‘accessory’ products and one high end item, with the aim to obviously make the most money over the course of the day.

Thanks to an enthusiatic pitch (and Brett’s decision to go straight in with money talk on the other team), David’s team won the balloon animals and animal t-shirts, while Scott’s team went for cat heat pads and an LED cat toy.

Over with the high end items, David’s team decided luxury dog beds and throws were the best bet, while Scott’s team were hoping to be best in show with customisable cat towers, after the seller gave them encouraging past selling figures.

David’s balloons proved ridiculously popular with customers, although he did neglect the higher priced t-shirts. However, their luxury dog beds took a while to shift.

In the other team, Selina Waterman-Smith managed to sell one customisable cat tower while Scott rocketed ahead with three. Sadly, despite her best efforts, Ruth came away with a grand total of zero sales.

In the end, it was David and Team Versatile who walked away triumphant, leaving Scott to bring Selina and Ruth back into the boardroom.

Criticising Ruth’s lack of sales, Lord Sugar said: “I don’t dispute your enthusiasm but you claim to be a salesperson, you claim to train people how to sell - here we are in a sales task and you failed miserably.”

He then told Scott: “You needed to be a bit more ruthless in choosing your high end sales division, and I’m not using that as a pun because maybe less Ruth would have been the best thing. So Ruth, you’re fired.”

In the taxi home, she admitted she was ‘disappointed’ to be sat there, but acknowledged that Selina HAD sold an item and she hadn’t.

Selina narrowly escaped getting fired herself, being given a final warning by Lord Sugar who told her that Karren Brady and Claude Littner were not happy with her.

Gulp.

The Apprentice continues on BBC One, Wednesday at 9pm.
