Philip Morant School and College in Colchester is abolishing all out of hours school work in favour of giving teachers more time to properly plan for lessons.
‘The job of a teacher is impossible,’ principal Catherine Hutley told the Daily Gazette newspaper.
‘There are not enough hours in the day for a teacher to teach, set homework, mark homework, and plan their lessons.

‘We have the most dedicated and committed staff you could possibly ask for.
‘They are working every hour God sends but planning lessons can fall by the wayside.
‘We want it to be the number one priority so teachers can plan for students’ individual needs and keep on top of their progress on a daily basis.’

She admitted that the move might prove controversial but that it would ultimately prove beneficial for students.
She added that homework is too often made up of compulsory course work not finished in class.
The school has more than 1,600 students and was rated as ‘good’ by Ofsted inspectors.
British students are estimated to spend almost five hours a week on homework.
