The Great British Bake Off: Patissorry to see Selasi go

It’s semi final week, it’s patisserie week and it’s the week our star man Selasi succumbs to stress.

Prowling around the tent, whipping his tea towel and growling “They need to cook” - at his parmiers, not the other contestants (though Sue wouldn’t have minded) - it’s the first time we’ve seen the hitherto coolest man in the hottest tent lose his cool.

He still did it very stylishly though, with Sue mopping his brow - and pocketing the tissue, twice.

But his name is Selasi, and he doesn’t do pressure. At one point he called out:

“Bakers! Two hours left!”

“Are you doin’ me out of a job, mate? This is all I had!” - Sue

“Sorry” (laughing)

“I was like the speaking clock but with puns”

“Do you want us to come and bake for you?” Mel joined in

His parmiers needed longer in the oven, his Savarin still had the membrane on its oranges and the fantastic sponges in his fondant fancies weren’t enough to save him. Fare thee well, my lovely.

“It’s been absolutely amazing. Splendid. Loved it all.” - Selasi

And he’ll always have the memory of Mel and Sue fighting over being the first to cuddle him.

Twitter mourns again:

“National mourning declared. The People’s Champion has left the tent. Goodbye sweet champion” - @BleatingGreek

“Goodbye my sweet prince, you were too pure for this world, too good” - @Cooks_Books_

“Oh Selasi. No longer on @BritishBakeOff, but forever in our dreams” - @Purple_Ronnie

But solace came quickly with news that Selasi is opening his own bakery in West London. Form an orderly queue.

Star Baker went to a surprised Andrew, who’d had a tetchy week, redoing his pastry for the signature bake and then promptly winning it, coming second to Jane in the tech challenge and then producing another fine, visually striking showstopper. Candice had a good overall week too, and it was Jane who was at risk along with Selasi. But she won the techy challenge while he came dead last in everything. Sometimes, life just ain’t fair.

Mel and Sue showed once again how much Bake Off will miss them, with the best introduction ever.

Putting off saying it doesn’t make it easier. Next week’s final is the ultimate finale. Three bakers will challenge for the 2016 crown and move onto to greater things. Then all of us will grieve for GBBO as we know it *sobs*.
