The Golden Globe Award nominees have been announced, with BBC’s The Night Manager up for four awards.

The stunning adaptation of John Le Carre’s spy story, updated for a modern audience, wowed the viewing public when it broadcast here in January, and has since done the same in the US.

Tom Hiddleston is nominated for Best Actor in the TV Movie or Mini-Series category for his intense performance as Jonathan Pine, with the sublime Olivia Coleman and Hugh Laurie both named in the Best Supporting Actress and Actor categories for TV Movie or Mini-Series.

The Night Manager itself gets a nod for Best TV Movie or Mini-Series, but has to fend off American Crime, The Dresser, The Night Of and People v. O.J. Simpson.

Joining Hiddleston in the same category and topping a great year is actor/rapper Riz Ahmed, for his role as Naz in crime drama The Night Of . We’ll also see him as an ex-Imperial pilot turned rebel in Star Wars: Rogue One due out this week.

Other Brits nominated include Matthew Rhys in the Best Actor (Drama) category for cold war espionage drama The Americans. A veteran of stage and screen although still only 42, Rhys first starred on American TV as lawyer Kevin in family drama Brothers and Sisters for five seasons.

There are nods to breakout and established stars in the Best Actress categories: Sixties icon Charlotte Rampling is nominated in TV Movie or Mini-Series for London Spy, while Claire Foy, after impressing as Anne Boleyn in Wolf Hall, secures the same nomination in Drama for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in Netflix’s sumptuous drama, The Crown. Irish actress Caitriona Balfe joins Claire for her already award winning part as Claire Fraser in the historical time travel series Outlander.

With Coleman in the Support Actress section are Thandie Newton and Lena Headey. Westworld has made a huge impact on our screens, with Newton as host madam, Maeve Millay. Headey of course, completed season 6 of Game of Thrones as Queen Cersei and we look forward to seeing how comfortable she’s finding that Iron Throne in season 7!

The Crown is up against Game of Thrones, Westworld, Stranger Things and my new favourite This is Us for Best Drama Series.

Meryl Streep is the recipient of the Cecil B. DeMille Award, joining an incredible roll of talent. I’m shocked there are still things she hasn’t won!

Full details of all the Golden Globe nominees in film and TV can be found here. The ceremony takes place on NBC on January 8, hosted by Jimmy Fallon.
