For the first time in history, the royal family have allowed a look into the usually secretive Diplomatic Reception, held every year to celebrate the UK’s diplomatic community.

Wearing their evening best, everyone’s eyes fell to Kate’s gorgeous red gown. Designed by her go-to occasion designer, Jenny Packham, the glittering dress was first worn at a state banquet for the Chinese President in October 2015. In fact, the dress was specifically designed in a royal red shade to celebrate China.

The Duchess also donned the Cambridge Lover’s Knot tiara: a design made of diamond and pearls that was much loved by William’s mother, Diana. It is said to be so heavy that it gave her headaches but Kate appeared to be all smiles.

This is only the fifth time the Duchess has worn a royal tiara; the first being at her wedding in 2011. The Cambridge Lover’s design was made in 1914 for Queen Mary who then left it to the Queen. In 1981, the monarch gave the tiara to Diana as a wedding present who wore it on several occasions.

Going back to the rest of the royal family’s reception outfits: Camilla wore a white beaded dress by Bruce Oldfield along with a stand-out pearl choker. The Queen, meanwhile, opted for a bespoke design by her senior dresser and personal assistant, Angela Kelly, as well as a sapphire and diamond tiara from her collection.

The men, wearing their usual royal regalia, sported a variety of honourable medals with Prince Philip donning the most.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen the entire family pose together recently. The famous faces were recently given the Christmas treatment at Madame Tussauds with Kate and William wearing a festive jumper made for two.
