But instead of Claudia Winkleman hosting the show, the US competition will be presided over by Scottish actor Alan Cumming.

The cast is a little different for the US series, as it mixes 10 of the general public with 10 celebrities who include stars of Below Deck, Survivor and Big Brother as well as The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills' Brandi Glanville and Olympic gold medallist swimmer Ryan Lochte.

A series of challenges will give them the chance to build their prize fund up to $250,000, but they must weed out all of the traitors, whose identities remain a secret, or they will scoop the entire jackpot in the final.

Viewers won't have to worry about stumbling across spoilers either, as it only begins airing in the US hours earlier.

Director of BBC iPlayer and channels Dan McGolpin said: "Following the huge success of The Traitors, which has been streamed more than 28 million times on BBC iPlayer and was the talk of the nation over the festive period, we’re delighted to give BBC viewers the chance to watch the brand new US series within hours of its release in America.

"Hosted by the brilliant Alan Cumming and filmed at the same location as the UK series, it’s a new year treat for those seeking out more treachery - all is about to be revealed on BBC iPlayer, BBC Three and BBC One."

The first series of The Traitors for the UK saw three faithfuls - Aaron, Hannah and Meryl - win the prize after identifying traitor Wilf in the final moments of the game, a controversial episode as he appeared to have been outed by a disgruntled fellow traitor, Kieran.

As well as streaming on iPlayer, The Traitors US will air in double bills on BBC One from 25 January, and in single episodes three nights a week on BBC Three from 24 January.
