The Voice: Final blind auditions round up

The final lot finally – it has dragged a bit, hasn’t it? We’ve seen a lot of people who didn’t make it through, and the first two this week fell into that pool.

31 year old asbestos supervisor Paul from Essex could play harmonica, drums and guitar. The occasion got to him and his harmonica break was the best bit.

Full time singer Abi, doing the rounds of pubs and clubs, was a child actor on Hollyoaks, joining them after she sent them a song as a 14 year old. Returning to her passion of music, she has an understated style and a lovely emotional tone. So obviously, she never got a turn.

Will composes his Fire Fire Fire song, live and ad hoc with the band. It’s a reggae/samba style groove – he needs to finish and release it!

There’s a fine line between a confident personality and annoying, and 25 year old Kit Rice definitely dropped into the annoying category. He’d better be good or I’m going to throw up, he’s that nauseating. He’s going to do a “sex guitar funk version” of Ain’t No Sunshine. Oh, god, really? And he’s going to serve it up cold?

I’ve clearly gone deaf since last night because I thought he was dreadful. After the first three words, I found it tuneless. I even played it twice, trying to find what I missed, since Gavin turned so fast. Et tu, Jennifer? Didn’t like his falsetto, all style over substance. We shall see. He completes Team JHud.

The singing, dancing, acting football playing student Kelly has a voice but she needed to project it more. No turn, but maturity will help, so keep going Kelly,

Singer songwriter Tim opted for Will, liking his “I’m not going to sugar coat it” pitch, as he praised his excellent falsetto but recognised the lower register needed some work.

Musician and guitar teacher Gavin had a nice, soft rocky tone with good range but maybe it was too nice. (I’d have taken him over Kit any day).

Initially, I thought Linda was another annoying one, but she saved herself on stage with a beautiful version of The Long and Winding Road, reminding me of Eva Cassidy. Will, Tom and Gavin all turned and Linda mused about whether her wearing heart shaped earrings was a sign she should go with Will, since he was wearing a heart on his jacket. No, said Gavin, it isn’t. Tom tells her the song was written for him by Paul McCartney, and it’s Will who pitches on behalf of Tom, saying it’s destiny. She completes Team Tom.

16 year old college student Victoria from Wales got turns from both Will and Gavin on the first few notes. Different, effortless, personable and funny, her nan’s a Londoner by the sound of her and is obsessed with Will. So that was Team Will complete.

Gavin is left with the final auditionee whether he likes them or not – remember how well that worked for Will one year? Gavin was luckier, as product demonstrator Ruth burst out from behind her apron and stand to show the coaches exactly what you can do with an operatic voice – a quirky, sassy version of Britney’s Toxic (remember when Miss Fitz on X-Factor did it jazzy?) Terrific voice, great personality – should be a lot of fun. Fabulous audition and Will’s all over her pop opera (popera?). Grrrrr. Yes, Will – perhaps next year you’ll give them a chance?
