The BBC aired the first of five party leader interviews with Andrew Neil tonight (May 22) – and we had Theresa May to kick things off.

Every night this week, one of the candidates in the general election will be grilled by the famously tough BBC presenter.

Conservative party leader and current Prime Minister May was in the hot seat this evening, and many viewers at home found the entire interview very tense and awkward.

Right from the beginning of the show, Neil began with the Conservatives' drop in the polls following the publication of their manifesto from last week, and the 'U-turn' that May announced this morning regarding the cap on social care.

Neil continued down this line of questioning, telling the PM that he believed she was avoiding his questions, and that her manifesto was "half-baked" (his words) and lacking in information on costing.

It's safe to say that viewers on Twitter found it a very uncomfortable watch, with many admitting they would be terrified if they themselves were ever grilled by Andrew Neil.

There are so many tweets about tonight's interview, and we've gathered just a few here:

Theresa May's election campaign has also seen her refuse to compare herself to anyone from Harry Potter, field a question from Jeremy Corbyn on Facebook Live and face harsh questions about her shoes on The One Show.
