Where do British people actually go to settle down? New information from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) shows it isn’t London.

Instead, when it comes to picking a place to live, more people seem to stay in coastal areas - with Tendring on the Essex Coast seeing the biggest ‘inflow’ in the UK.

The ONS statistics are based on how many people move out of an area, per 1,000 which move in - offering a perspective on the places British people like to ‘put down roots’.

The ONS says, ‘Of the English regions, London had the highest rate of internal migration net outflow (9.1 per 1,000 residents as at mid-2014). The region with the highest rate of internal migration net inflow was the South West (5.5 per 1,000 residents as at mid-2014).’
