THFD extinguishes fire on Spruce Street

Mar. 25—No one was injured early Monday when a vacant structure caught fire on Spruce Street, but the Red Cross had to find shelter for occupants of a nearby house exposed to the flames, Terre Haute Fire Chief Darrick Scott said.

The Fire Department received a call at 1:44 a.m. about a fire at 1536 Spruce St.

Responding units found a vacant two-story structure which was almost fully ablaze. A nearby house with three occupants was hit by flames as well.

It took 60 minutes to extinguish the fire, with firefighters spending a total of four and a half hours on the scene to eliminate hot spots.

The Red Cross was summoned to assist the three occupants of that residence, but there were no injuries. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
