Thick Smoke Chokes Townsville Sky as Scrap Metal Yard Catches Fire

Thick black smoke filled the sky above the north Queensland city of Townsville, on February 21, amid reports a scrap metal yard had caught fire.

The Courier Mail newspaper reported three people were injured in the blaze and transported to hospital.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services attended the scene, according to a statement.

A passerby, who declined to be named, told Storyful he shot this video at about 10am near Alexander Bodyworks in Garbutt, a suburb of Townsville.

An ABC Australia reporter Tweeted: "Pretty thick smoke from a blaze at a Garbutt scrap metal yard in Townsville. Police say a welder ignited the fire about 9.30am which quickly spread.
