Thief steals granite gateposts from Launceston old folks home

A thief has been sentenced after somehow making off with two granite gateposts from a Cornwall care home. John Chapman appeared in Bodmin Magistrates' Court this week having pleaded guilty to a charge of theft.

The court heard how on November 28, 2022, the 41-year-old from Church View in North Petherwin near Launceston, went to the Beaumont Court Residential Home down the road from where he lives and stole two solid granite gateposts belonging to Terrence Astin.

The court was told that the gatepost were worth £800. Chapman pleaded guilty to the theft on July 29 and was sentenced to 12 days of mental health treatment with We Are With You as well as another 26 days of another rehabilitation programme and 15 days of rehabilitation activity.

He was also ordered to pay £800 in compensation and pay £620 in court costs.
