A married couple were subjected to a “terrifying ordeal” when knife-wielding thieves broke into their home as they slept and used pliers to cut a necklace from the woman’s neck.

The couple, in their 50s, woke just before 3am on Monday to find two masked men in their bedroom in Ilford.

One of the men pinned the woman to the bed using his foot as the second held a knife to her husband’s throat.

The first thief then took out a pair of pliers and cut a necklace from the woman’s neck and demanded she hand over her earrings and a ring.

Other people at the house in South Park Drive, including the couple's 20-year-old granddaughter, disturbed the intruders, forcing them to flee through the back garden.

The first suspect is described as a white man, aged between 25 and 30 years old, and the second is said to be a black man around the same age.

Detective Constable Sophie Mostyn, from Redbridge CID, said: "This was a terrifying ordeal for the victims and it has left them extremely distressed.

“We are determined to catch those responsible and put them before the courts. We'd appeal for anyone with any information to contact us as a matter of priority."

No arrests have been made and enquiries continue.
