New sound: head to the Old Blue Last for a new of up-and-coming music
New sound: head to the Old Blue Last for a new of up-and-coming music

If you're making plans, below is a little of what's coming up in London next week.

There's plenty on to break up the dreariness of January, including a cocktail masterclass for those who've quite sensibly decided to ditch dry Jan.

Elsewhere, there's top theatre in Islington, as Steven Berkoff's 1975 play East gets a revival, while in Shoreditch the Old Blue Last are continuing their Hello 2018 showcase with a night of new music.

If none of that appeals, then eat yourself happy at the new French-meets-Japanese Bistro Mirey. Bon Appétit... or should that be itadakimasu?

Monday January 15

Grumpy interviewee and James Bond villain Steven Berkoff is, of course, also a master playwright. The award-winning East, a sort-of coming of age tale about growing up in the rough East End, has been revived at the King’s Head Theatre in Islington, where it’s on until February 3. Expect a night of dark laughs and brutal charm.

Until February 3, King’s Head Theatre, 115 Upper St, N1 1QN, kingsheadtheatre.com

Up in Dalston, Tony Conigliaro’s excellent Untitled Bar has gone all arty. They’re hosting Pretty In Punk, a gallery of photographer Julia Gorton’s work, including snap shots of punk icons Debbie Harry, Iggy Pop, Patti Smith and Richard Hell. Go, enjoy, then drink, drink, drink.

Until February, Untitled Bar, 538 Kingsland Rd, London E8 4AH, untitled-bar.com

Over in Shoreditch, the Old Blue Last are continuing their Hello 2018 showcase with a night featuring Heavenly Records signees Boy Azooga and the bluntly named Sports Team, as well as JW Ridley and Underwater Boys. If you like your music a bit Cure-like, a bit woozy and decidedly lo-fi, this absolutely is the night for you.

Tonight, The Old Blue Last, 38 Great Eastern St, EC2A 3ES, theoldbluelast.com

It’s half way through the month, you’re probably still broke, the weather is rubbish. Why would you still be committed to Dry January? The K West Hotel & Spa in Shepherd’s Bush is running 90 minute cocktail masterclasses every day, Monday to Sunday, 4 till 7, to teach Londoners how to mix up Cosmopolitans and Mojitos. There is, of course, plenty of tasting required throughout the sessions.

Throughout January, K West Hotel & Spa, Richmond Way, W14 0AX, k-west.co.uk

The Brumus Bar at Haymarket Hotel have teamed up with the ‘Rat Pack Live From Las Vegas’ show, which is showing at the Theatre Royal next door. They’ll be laying on the kind of cocktails the actual Rat Pack would have drunk – plenty of Martinis and Manhattans – while the The Leon Garner Trio swing through jazz standards.

Until Feb 3, 1 Suffolk Pl, SW1Y 4HX, firmdalehotels.com

Hurrah for Gerald Mirey and Ko Ito. Their Bistro Mirey pop-up has now gone permanent on Lillie Road in Fulham. There might be ‘bistro’ in the name, but it’s actually a mash-up of classic French cooking with super-modern Japanese techniques. It’s soft launch has been a success and now it’s up and running for real: my tip is to try the Hokkaido-style pheasant with blueberry sauce.
