A golden retriever who was destined to be slaughtered at a dog meat farm is now safe and happy – with a set of prosthetic paws to help her run around again.

Chi Chi was found outside the farm in South Korea, tied up so tightly by her paws that the bindings were cutting away at her flesh.

She had been cruelly dumped inside a rubbish bag after farmers decided she was not good enough to eat.

With her future looking bleak, an animal rescue group found her in time to save her life.

Unfortunately Chi Chi’s paws were in such a bad condition that vets decided the best thing to do was to amputate them completely.

Despite her disability, Elizabeth and Richard Howell wanted Chi Chi in their lives and adopted her, flying her 6,000 miles back to their home in Arizona.

Elizabeth revealed: “We first saw Chi Chi in a video that was shared on Facebook in January just after her amputation, we wanted to know what had happened to her so got in touch with the charity.

“We already had three rescue dogs and were not looking to adopt a fourth but her awful situation just struck me and I couldn’t get her off my mind.”

Chi Chi had to have fresh bandages applied every day but the prosthetics supplied by vets in South Korea didn’t fit properly so the family set about raising £2,700 to buy all-new prosthetic paws.

Her prosthetist even made her a spare set for free and now Chi Chi can run around happily like any other dog.

Elizabeth added: “She has so much more freedom now and loves being around people.

“She has so much more mobility now and we are working on getting them as comfortable as possible for her.”

Chi Chi’s family are now hoping to get her officially certified as a therapy dog so she can help others in need.
