Many of us seriously underestimate the time it takes for alcohol to leave our bodies – with research from insurer LV saying that 46% of us underestimate it.

A new app – The Morning After – lets people calculate exactly when it is safe to drive, based on what they drank the night before.

One in five of us has driven the morning after a night of drinking, despite knowing that they might be over the limit, an AA survey found.

AA president Edmund King said, ‘If you have got any doubt it is probably unsafe to drive.’

The Morning After campaign’s app lets you calculate when you’re safe, using various common drinks – based on a zero blood alcohol level.

The app is free for iPhone and Android.

The app’s makers say, ‘The calculator allows one hour for each unit of alcohol, plus an additional hour for the first drink to allow for the alcohol to enter the bloodstream. It then rounds up the calculation to the nearest half hour.

‘The calculator bases its calculation from the time you stop, not when you start drinking. Some people say this is over-cautious, but we’d rather be safe than sorry.’
