This Is What You Need To Look Like If You Want To Survive A Car Crash

Meet Graham. He’s not the most handsome chap, but behind that rather robust exterior is a body that can handle anything.

Because Graham is built to withstand and survive many traffic accidents - unlike the rest of us.

He’s an interactive model that Transport Accident Commission (TAC) Victoria developed with trauma surgeon Christian Kenfield, crash investigator expert David Logan and artist Patricia Piccinini.

TAC chief Joe Calafiore said: “People can survive running at full pace into a wall but when you’re talking about collisions involving vehicles, the speeds are faster, the forces are greater and the chances of survival are much slimmer.”

Christian Kenfield, a trauma surgeon at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, said: “The strongest man cannot hold himself from going forwards in a car accident because the forces are so great.”

The head is the most significant part of the body for injury - shaped like Graham’s it becomes better equipped to handle the forces in common crash scenarios.

Sadly, our bodies simply aren’t equipped to handle these kind of forces. Respect to Graham.

Anyone near Melbourne can get up close and personal with Graham at the State Library of Victoria, from today until 8 August.
