This poor dog's fur was so matted it couldn't walk, see or WEE

When poor Towser the terrier was taken into an animal sanctuary, her fur was so matted she couldn’t see, walk or WEE.

The 11-year-old and another dog Bobby, aged nine, were handed in to the sanctuary after their elderly owner was rushed into hospital.

Both were in a neglected condition but Hillside Animal Sanctuary has spent hundreds of pounds helping them to recover.

Holeigh Melton, kennel supervisor at the sanctuary in Norwich, said: “When Towser came in she was in a serious amount of pain. I had to hold her in a towel to try and not hurt her.

“Every time you touched her she would growl. She wasn’t aggressive she was just hurting.”

Holeigh added: “We were totally shocked at their neglected condition – Towser was so matted that she could neither walk nor see. Her coat was so overgrown that she had trouble relieving herself.

“It was discovered on X-ray, that her bladder was full of crystalised stones due to her not being able to wee properly.”

Both dogs needed to be sedated to have their coats removed and during the process, staff struggled to find their tails because they were so unkempt.

After already spending more than £600 treating the pair, staff were faced with the decision of whether to risk an operation for Towser to remove 200 bladder stones – her only chance of a normal life.

Holeigh added: “Although it would have been easy ‘to let her go’, we took the decision to try and save her.

“Her life was certainly hanging in the balance but, fortunately, after spending several days with the vet, the surgery to remove 200 stones from her bladder was successful, and she is now on the road to recovery.”

The treatment cost £1,500 in total and Hillside is appealing for donations to allow it to continue to help more animals like Towser and Bobby in the future.
