Kain, a shih tzu, has had his long, filthy hair chopped back and is now back to full health. But RSPCA officers are very worried about the way he was being treated and whether there might be more pets living in squalor at the same place. He was found in Braunstone Close, Braunstone, on November 30, wandering around and struggling to see through his hair.

They’re usually cute and fluffy, but this shih tzu was left with fur so badly matted it could barely walk.

The poor pooch was found wandering the streets with a filthy coat that meant he could hardly see.

Lucky for the stricken dog, a member of the public found him in Braunstone, Leicestershire, on November 30, and he was whisked to the vets for an emergency haircut.

The shih tzu has been named Kain by the RSPCA officers looking after him at Woodside Animal Centre in Braunstone Frith, Leicester.

The RSCPA is now appealing for his former owner to come forward, as they fear there are more pets being left uncared for.

Inspector Sally Kearns said: “Poor Kain was in such a state when he was found by a member of public – he has clearly not been cared for in some time. His fur was extremely matted.

“He was taken to a stray dog kennel and they immediately called us. We went and took some photos and then clipped his hair.”

She added: “There weren’t any health issues in Kain’s case but obviously we would like to have a word with the owner.

“We’re worried about where he was being kept and if there are other animals there.”

She said it was a relief to find there were no sores on Kain’s body when his fur was clipped and reminded owners that clipping dogs’ hair isn’t just to make them look good.

“Clipping dogs isn’t just a cosmetic thing – it’s important because long, dirty hair can cause skin problems and hide growths,” she said. “It also causes problems if dirty hair is weighing them down.

“Cases like this are fairly regularly, sadly, and sometimes the matted hair can affect their movement and make it very hard for them to walk.”
