How would you describe yourself? Would you say you were, say, ‘An enthusiast’ - or would you say you were, ‘Keen, enthusiastic, up-for-it…’?

The answer could reveal a lot about your political beliefs, scientists found.

Researchers from the University of Kent analysed political speeches - and found that conservatives tended to use nouns (ie ‘enthusiast’), whereas liberals use adjectives (ie ‘enthusiastic’).

The researchers analysed speeches by conservative Republicans and liberal Democrats in America - as well as speeches in Poland and Lebanon.

The researchers believe that the increased use of nouns by conservatives reflects a desire for ‘structure and certainty’.

Dr Aleksandra Cichocka of the University of Kent said, ‘We wanted to collect data in different languages and different socio-political contexts.

'The US has a two-party system. Therefore, it was fairly easy to identify the more conservative presidents, representing the Republican Party, and the more liberal presidents, representing the Democratic Party, for language analysis.’

'The Polish study provided the opportunity to test our ideas in a very different political context - the post-Communist one.’
