Thomas Markle told Prince Harry to 'promise you will never raise your hand against my daughter'

Thomas Markle has spoken about the moment Prince Harry asked for permission to marry his daughter.

The 73-year-old was speaking to Good Morning Britain this morning about the moment his daughter, who is now the Duchess of Sussex, revealed she had a new boyfriend and apologising for the controversy he was involved with before the wedding.

He also recounted the moment Harry asked for his daughter's hand in marriage, and how he approved but made sure to give a fatherly warning to the prince.

"Harry asked for her hand on the phone and I said: 'You are a gentleman, promise me you will never raise your hand against my daughter and of course I will give you my permission'," he said.

Not missing an opportunity to praise his daughter during the interview, Mr Markle added that she "made a good pick" when choosing a husband.

Mentioning that he had spoken to Prince Harry on the phone about President Trump, host Piers Morgan asked Mr Markle if he believed the prince was a "Trump supporter", to which Mr Markle replied "I would hope not now".

The former lighting director added: "[Harry] said 'give Donald Trump a chance'."

Members of the Royal Family are expected to remain completely neutral in political matters, however Mr Markle also told the hosts Harry appeared "open to the experiment" of Brexit during their conversations.

Mr Markle was not able to attend the wedding as he was recovering from an operation, however he told the programme he was "upset" that we hasn't able to walk his daughter down the aisle, saying she looked so beautiful it brought him to tears.

However he added that he was "honoured" to have Prince Charles walk with Meghan in his place, saying: "I can't think of a better replacement than Prince Charles."

It was reported before the wedding that Mr Markle had been selling staged photos of himself to the press in order to improve his image, which he told Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid was "a mistake".

"I spoke to [Meghan and Harry] and I apologised. I realised it was a serious mistake. It's hard to take it back," he said during the interview.

Representatives for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been approached for comment.
