Step off Tom Hiddleston and Michael Keaton, Thor: Ragnarok's Comic-Con International trailer sets the stage for Cate Blanchett to become the best Marvel villain yet.

The Academy Award winner rejoices in being unabashedly evil as she brings down the pillars of Asgard and crushes Thor's hammer into dust as Hela, the goddess of death and destruction. Bask in her glory in the trailer below:

Hela is so powerful that she quickly dispatches of Thor and sends him into exile from his own home (again) - and makes it all look devilishly fun.

"I'm not a queen or a monster," Hela tells Thor. "I'm the goddess of death. What were you the god of, again?"

YAAAAAAAAS KWEEEEN! In order to best the goddess of death, Thor has to get his mojo back fighting in the gladiator pits of the planet Sakaar without his trusty hammer Mjölnir, where he finds himself facing off with a friend from work (aka The Hulk).

"You and I had a fight recently," Thor later reveals to a fuddled Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), who wonders: "Did I win?"

The always-modest God of Thunder brags that he'd toppled the Incredible Hulk "easily" (even though the Big Guy wiped the floor with him), leading to yet more scepticism as Banner mumbles: "That doesn't sound right."

"Well, it's true," Thor snickers.

The latest trailer from Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi embraces the inherent humour in Thor that Marvel previously kept to a minimum in previous movies, including a funny reference to Tony Stark's sales pitch from The Avengers.

"I'm putting together a team. Like the old days," Thor says. Over his pitch, we see The Hulk and Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) gearing up for battle... and Loki (Tom Hiddleston) literally chained up.

"Surpriiiiiiiise," Loki sneers. "This will be such fun!"

Stay tuned for a post-credits bit at the end where Hulk actually speaks - about his love of smoldering fire, no less!

This autumn's blockbuster also lays the groundwork for what's to come in the MCU, in that its climax leads directly into how the God of Thunder meets the Guardians of the Galaxy in next year's Avengers: Infinity War.

"I think that we are finding ourselves as we complete Phase 3 and finish this 22-movie narrative that it's working out that way," Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige teased earlier in July.

"We did three Iron Man films, three Captain America films, three Thor films."
