‘I thought the invite was an April Fools’ joke!’ Royal Wedding preacher reflects on the big day
The Royal Wedding created an unlikely star in the shape of American bishop Reverend Michael Curry, who has revealed how he thought his invite was a joke.
The preacher’s passionate 14-minute sermon during the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, entitled ‘The Power of Love’, was one of the stand-out moments of Saturday’s ceremony.
It was the most tweeted-about moment of the day, according to Twitter – but Rev Curry said he thought the invitation to speak at Harry and Meghan’s wedding was a prank.
He told ITV’s Good Morning Britain: ‘I thought somebody was doing an April Fools’ joke on me.
‘I just didn’t in my wildest imagination…’
Reflecting on how he thought his speech had gone down, the bishop said he had ‘no idea’ just how much of a stir it caused.

Guests at the wedding – including Camilla Parker-Bowles and Kate Middleton – were caught on camera stifling laughter and appeared bemused during the sermon.
Commenting on the newly-married couple Rev Curry added: ‘They’re going to work to make this world better and empowering women is one of the ways we do that.’
