Thousands of people have signed a petition to make reliable rent payments proof that an individual is able to afford a mortgage.
As it stands, the process of obtaining a mortgage very much depends on your income, debt and credit score. Lenders need to rest assured an applicant is financially stable and can keep up with monthly repayments.
The petition calls for lenders to take an applicant’s rental history as a tenant into account.
The petition was launched by Jamie Jack Pogson, who said: “Since living on my own I have paid £70,000+ in rent on time yet still struggle to get a mortgage.
“Unless you’re getting handouts, wealthy or in receipt of inheritance it’s almost impossible.
“I want paying rent on time to be recognised as evidence that mortgage repayments can be met.”
The petition has been signed by more than 120,000, which is tens of thousands over the number of signatures needed for Parliament to consider debating the issue.
