Thousands of people lined the streets of Santos on January 3 as Pele’s coffin was removed from the Estadio Urbano Caldeira and taken in procession around the city ahead of the soccer legend’s funeral.
The three-time World Cup winner died from cancer on Thursday, December 29, aged 82.
Pele’s coffin was displayed on the field of the Santos club, where he spent most of his career, scoring 643 goals in 659 games. Brazil’s new president, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, joined those paying tribute at the stadium.
