Three families have been unable to return home after a crack was found in a North London town block.

About 150 people were evacuated from 70 flats in The Combe in Munster Square, near Regents Park station, on Thursday (November 22), when a resident on floor nine called firefighters after hearing a loud noise in the 19-storey high-rise and crack was discovered.

The fire brigade assessment led to a complete evacuation of the building, and around 50 residents were sent to the Swiss Cottage Leisure Centre with the help of British Red Cross. Others made their own arrangements or stayed with family and friends. Security and fencing were erected overnight ahead of another assessment by specialist engineers the next morning.

The majority of people have now been able to return home, after the property was deemed structurally safe. In a statement on Friday evening (November 22), Camden Council said a Wates dangerous structures team found "the block is structurally sound and the crack discovered yesterday is on an internal, non-load bearing wall, which does not affect the integrity of the building". After a walkabout from the London Fire Brigade it was agreed safe for most residents to return.

But the people in the home where the crack was found, those in the flat above and below, are still unable to return. This was 'to allow for additional monitoring early next week', the council said, adding: "These residents have been contacted directly by the council and have been offered accommodation and support."

Councillor Richard Olszewski, Leader of Camden Council, said: “The most important thing is almost all residents will be able to return to their homes tonight. The Wates report shows the building is safe and the London Fire Brigade agree with our assessment.

“We had to take action to ensure residents were safe while we fully investigated this matter and I’m grateful for the patience and cooperation residents have shown over the last 24 hours. We have a small amount of repair work to do within the block now, which we will now concentrate on to ensure the three remaining households can come home. These residents have our full support tonight.”
