Three in hospital after car crashes into building in central London
Three people are in hospital after a car crashed into a steakhouse in Haymarket in central London.
The Metropolitan Police said its officers were called to reports of a crash near a branch of the Angus Steakhouse restaurant chain at around 6.50pm on Tuesday.
Witnesses reported that the car mounted the pavement and then hit the Angus Steakhouse.
The driver, a passenger and a pedestrian, were taken to hospital.
There are no reports of any other serious injuries and it is not being treated as terror-related, the force said.
Videos posted on social media showed dozens of people gathered around the smashed up vehicle after the crash. Shattered glass could be seen around the car.
A staff member told MailOnline the car would have hit diners if it had not been stopped by one of London’s maps, known as monoliths, which brought it to a sudden stop.
She told the website: “The car came to a stop one metre before our restaurant.
“The ground was a bit slippery and the driver obviously lost control. They hit one of the maps [monolith]. This is what stopped the restaurant being hit.
“Everyone was in shock, you don’t see this every day. There was a loud crash. There were a lot of people, it was very crowded.”
A London Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We were called at 6:52pm today [Nov 12] to reports of an incident at Coventry Street, W1D.
“We sent three ambulance crews, an incident response officer, an advanced paramedic and a medic in a fast response car. We also dispatched London’s Air Ambulance.
“We treated three patients at the scene. We took all three to a major trauma centre, two as a priority.”
