Three 5G broadband: latest network coverage switch-on will 'revolutionise the home internet experience'

The 5G network space is getting bigger as Three becomes the third service to turn on its 5G offering today.

However, things are a little different with Three’s 5G offering. When EE and Vodafone turned on their 5G mobile networks earlier this year, they launched new mobile contracts with the new range of 5G phones. Instead of doing this, Three is launching a new high-speed 5G Broadband service for the home.

With the Three 5G hub, customers simply plug the device in at home and connect up your devices. You don’t need a 5G device in order to access the 5G network as the hub takes in the 5G network and gives out a Wi-Fi signal so just connect up a phone, laptop or TV in the same way you would with a normal Wi-Fi connection.

What are the benefits of 5G?

5G uses higher frequencies than 4G, offering more speed and higher bandwidth.

This brings benefits such as faster speeds, low latency (the delay between two devices talking to one another) and constant connectivity – no more offline time in Central London for instance as the network will be able to handle thousands of devices being connected at the same time.

Essentially, this spells the end for a standard landline broadband connection, featuring wires and the like, as instead of waiting for an engineer to install a landline connection, the 5G hub takes hardly any time to set up.

In addition, 5G is supposed to offer speeds of up to 10 gigabits per second (Gbps) whereas the UK’s national average broadband speed for July 2019 was a measly 33.5Mbps. In comparison, top speeds for 4G are around 100Mbps, so most of the time relying on a 4G signal is faster than a home broadband speed.

Speaking about the 5G switch on, Three’s CEO Dave Dyson said: “Three’s 5G is going to revolutionise the home broadband experience. No more paying for landline rental, no more waiting for engineers, and even a same day delivery option. It really is the straightforward plug and play broadband that customers have been waiting for.

“We’ve taken a simple approach with one single truly unlimited data plan to give customers the opportunity to fully explore 5G and all its exciting possibilities. The ease and immediacy of it all means home broadband using 5G is going to be key to the future of the connected home.”

How 5G is going to change the world

Three’s 5G network is now available in London, and the company is planning to roll out the new network across 25 cities in the UK by the end of the year, including Birmingham, Glasgow, Sheffield and Leeds.

Three will launch 5G mobile contracts later in the year. At the moment, the company includes Huawei’s Mate 20 X 5G device and the new Samsung Note 10 5G amongst its 5G phones. However, if it’s a mobile 5G contract you’re after, EE and Vodafone already have that space covered, having switched their networks on in May and July respectively.

As always with 5G, it’s worth checking if the network is available in your area before forking out for the new technology. Three has a postcode checker for its 5G broadband service, whilst EE and Vodafone also offer similar services for their mobile networks.
