Three-year-old girl with brain tumour flies to Germany for proton beam therapy

A three-year-old girl with a brain tumour has arrived in Germany to receive potentially life-saving treatment.

Maham Usman, from Beckton, was taken by her father Usman Azam and her grandmother yesterday after being unable to receive proton beam therapy on the NHS.

An appeal for funds raised £35,000 after Maham’s story appeared in the Standard last week, but her parents need to double this to cover the costs of the treatment at the West German Proton Therapy Centre in Essen.

They have taken out loans and borrowed from family and friends to pay the initial charge of 76,000 (£69,000) and want Maham to start receiving care by tomorrow.

​Maham was 10 months old when she was diagnosed in January 2015 with a stage four medulloblastoma tumour “the size of a golf ball” in her head.

A £135 million proton beam therapy centre is being built at University College London Hospitals but is not due to open until 2020.
