A thug from Barnsley who set and stoked multiple fires during the large-scale disorder in South Yorkshire has been jailed.

Standing out in the crowd wearing a distinctive red and white hat, Scott Greenwood was seen on video setting fire to wood fence panelling in the carpark at Holiday Express Inn in Rotherham, on Sunday 4 August. He was also recorded taking bunches of dried grass and adding them to a fire on the grassland surrounding the hotel.

Following a media release Greenwood was identified and arrested. Refusing to provide a comment to any questions asked in a police interview, the 34-year-old was subsequently charged with violent disorder and arson with intent to endanger life.

On October 16 at Sheffield Crown Court, Greenwood, of Tingle Bridge Lane, Hemingfield, pleaded guilty to both charges. Today (Tuesday 26 November) he was jailed for six years, with an extended licence period of three years.

In total the investigation into the violent disorder at the Holiday Inn Express Hotel has resulted in 75 people being convicted and sentenced to a combined total of 167 years in jail.
