Manipulative Christopher Peberdy ordered his girlfriend to 'look at the floor' on trips out during a campaign of abuse which culminated in a terrifying attack. Now the 21-year-old is behind bars after leaving his victim feeling like 'a prisoner in her own home'.

Officers have praised Peberdy's now former partner for having the courage to report just what he'd done to her. Cheshire Police say they had been in a relationship for roughly four years during which time 'he gradually stopped her from seeing her friends or even leaving the address'.

While the relationship had started well he was said to have become 'increasingly physically and verbally abusive'. Cops say he hurled continual abuse - calling her various derogatory names.

Investigating officers say that when they would go out together she'd be forced to look at the floor 'as Peberdy wouldn’t allow her to look at anyone else'. He was said to ' systematically' cut her off from friends and family.

During one attack the victim even tried to run to the window to scream for help - only to be punched to the face by the thug. It was the day after that incident that she went to the police to report Peberdy.

Now the defendant, of White Avenue, Crewe, has appeared at Chester Crown Court and been handed a 45-month prison sentence. He'd pleaded guilty to five counts of non-fatal suffocation, non-fatal strangulation, assaults, and criminal damage.

Police say that on February 26 Peberdy became violent after a disagreement with his victim. He pulled her hair causing her to fall and as she ran to the window to scream for help he stopped her by punching her to the face, cutting her lip.

He spat at her, and 'smeared' his saliva in her face before pouring washing up liquid in her hair. Later that day he knocked her to the floor, kicking her in the stomach and groin. He then gripped her throat and as she tried to get up, the thug bit her arm.

The defendant pulled her over the sink, facing her upwards, and poured water over her mouth leaving her struggling to breath. At that point he told her he was going to kill her.

As she managed to get free he threw a metal grill pan at her. The following day the woman told the police just what she had been subjected to.

Peberdy was subsequently arrested and charged - and is now behind bars.

Inspector Victoria Shelton has branded the defendant a 'manipulative and violent domestic abuse perpetrator'.

Insp Shelton said: "Firstly, I would like to commend the bravery the victim has shown throughout the investigation into Peberdy’s frequent offending; he is a manipulative and violent domestic abuse perpetrator, whose behaviour left his victim feeling vulnerable, humiliated and in fear of even leaving the house.

“While no sentence will ever be able to make the victim forget what happened to her, I hope the fact that Peberdy will now be behind bars and will be continually managed upon his release from prison to prevent further offending, can provide her with both reassurance and a sense of closure.

“As this case demonstrates, for anyone suffering through domestic violence, there is always hope, and the constabulary takes all offences of this nature extremely seriously. Any allegation will be thoroughly investigated, with the wishes and needs of the victim as our main priority.”
