The creator of The Tick has confirmed that the show won't be saved beyond its second season.

Last month, it was announced the superhero-comedy series wouldn't be renewed for a third season on Amazon Prime.

There was hope the series may be picked up elsewhere, in the same way Brooklyn Nine-Nine was saved by NBC and Lucifer was rescued by Netflix.

However, show creator Ben Edlund confirmed in a series of tweets on Friday (June 14) that attempts to save The Tick have been unsuccessful and the show in its current format has "come to its end".

"After much door-knocking we have found no new home for the Tick series in this current market," he said.

"I'm sorry we could not reward your glorious support with better news. I am so proud of the show, of the cast and crew and writers, and so warmed by the fans."

"We will look for other opportunities to continue this story with this cast- but the current series must I’m afraid come to its end."

The Tick starred Peter Serafinowicz as the blue-clad superhero who teams up with accountant Arthur Everest (Griffin Newman) to investigate corrupt and villainous city officials.

The Amazon Prime series was the third of its kind to hit screens, with the superhero previously portrayed by Townsend Coleman in an 1994 animation, and Family Guy actor Patrick Warburton in a 2001 live-action series.

Speaking about its cancellation, Griffin Newman, who played Arthur Everest, added: "We tried, folks. We really tried.

"I'll post a more thorough, emotional thing later saying goodbye to The Tick once I've had a little more time to fully absorb.

"For now, I just want to extend my deepest gratitude to everyone who fought to keep our show alive. We are eternally grateful."

The Tick seasons 1 and 2 are available to stream on Amazon Prime.
