St Johnstone are closing in on naming Tiernan Lynch as their new manager, according to reports.

The Scottish Premiership side held talks with Lynch on Friday before identifying the 44-year-old as their number one choice.

The Courier reports a compensation package has now been agreed with the Irish League champions, while Lynch was due to hold further talks with the Saints on Saturday to thrash out personal terms.

Lynch - who is expected to be joined by his two assistants, brother Seamus and Gary Haveron – held initial talks with St Johnstone on Friday, just hours before taking to the dugout for his side's 3-1 win over Cliftonville in the Irish Premiership.

He was one of two men in the frame to be named as Craig Levein's successor, with Aberdeen coach Peter Leven also linked with the vacant role at McDiarmid Park.

Ayr United manager Scott Brown was another name believed to be considered, but he dropped out of the running after holding talks with the Perth club.

If a deal can be agreed, then Lynch could be in the dugout for next Sunday's trip to face Rangers at Ibrox.

Larne make their bow in the league phase of the UEFA Conference League next Thursday night away to Molde, but before that they face Harland and Wolff Welders in the BetMcLean Cup.

Now they could be without a manager if the Lynch deal goes through.
