Tiger Woods is to return to one of his most successful hunting grounds next week to try to get himself in peak condition for the US Open.

He missed the cut at last week’s US PGA Championship at Bethpage and cited the absence of a preparation event in the wake of his Augusta glory. The 43-year-old is determined not to make the same mistake again.

Woods on Thursday entered the Memorial in Ohio, the Jack Nicklaus-hosted tournament which he has won on five occasions but which also witnessed him shooting an 85 four years ago, the highest score of his career.

Woods will then have a week off before teeing it up at the third major of the season at Pebble Beach. At the famed Californian layout in 2000, Woods set a record in the majors by winning the US Open by 15 shots.

In Thursday’s first round of the European Tour’s Made in Denmark event in Farso, Matt Wallace carried over his US PGA display – where he finished in a tie for third – by posting a four-under 67.

The defending champion stands one off the pace set by a group featuring fellow Englishmen Paul Waring, Matthew Southgate and Tom Murray, plus Italian Edoardo Molinari and Spaniard Alejandro Canizares.
