Tim Farron baffles voters on campaign trail by telling them: ‘Smell my spaniel!’

Campaign slogans during elections set the mood and tone for political parties in election time.

From Ed Miliband’s hopeful ‘Britain can do better than this’ to Donald Trump’s defiant war cry of ‘Make America Great Again’, a slogan can say a lot in a few words.

However, the Lib Dems may be a little puzzled if what leader Tim Farron said out on the campaign trail today is what will soon be on T-shirts and mugs.

While out shoring up votes in Cambridge for the upcoming General Election, Mr Farron – who yesterday sacked parliamentary candidate David Ward over antisemitic comments – was mobbed by well-wishers.

In the midst of all the hustle and bustle, the Liberal Democrat leader can quite clearly be heard saying “smell my spaniel”.

Mr Farron – who is set to battle a giant fish finger in the June election – owns a springer spaniel named Jasper but it is not clear whether it was out with him today.

And even if he was – it’s a little difficult to work out what he was going on about.

Yahoo News UK contacted the Lib Dems in an effort to find out and it appears Jasper is their secret weapon to secure votes in June.

A spokeswoman told us: “We are finding Tim is going down very well in this election with canines and canine owners.

“Jasper is up in the constituency at the moment, no doubt undertaking his Liberal Democrat delivery round with his usual diligence.

“We don’t rule out, however, that he could be unleashed at some point nationally during the campaign as one of our secret election weapons.

“Jasper believes passionately that Britain should remain open, tolerant and united.”

Sounds like one sniff of Jasper is enough to turn someone into a Lib Dem voter.
