A BBC Question Time audience member has faced ridiculed after claiming he is "not even in the top 50 per cent of British earners," despite earning more than £80k a year.
"I am one of them people that he will tax more and I am nowhere near in the top five per cent," the participant insisted.
"You're not going after the billionaires, you're going after the employees where it's easy money because it's PAYE. I have no choice".
One viewer tweeted in response: "He earns almost 6 times what my single mother of 2 raised me and my sister on. This man has no right to turn around play any kind of victim. No right."
This afternoon I read about seven homeless men who died while sleeping on the streets. This evening I heard a man earning £80k complaining because he'd have to pay an extra £10 tax per month #bbcqt- Ben Claimant 💚 (@imajsaclaimant) November 22, 2019
What is this idiot on #bbcqt talking about?- Evolve Politics (@evolvepolitics) November 21, 2019
He says he earns >£80k a year and he's moaning about having to pay a few extra pounds a month in tax!
He's also trying to argue he's not in the top 5% of earners when he literally is!
Even the audience couldn't believe his idiocy.
Re that gammon plank on #BBCQT who said earning £80k a year meant he wasn't in the Top 5% income bracket...- LFTV (@TheBirmingham6) November 22, 2019
I checked it out on the IFS (Institute for Fiscal Studies) website calculator
He's in the top 2% !
He's literally OFF the chart pic.twitter.com/VzGcXFuhpX
The other important thing about Mr £80k is that Fiona Bruce failed dismally to correct him on a claim that was clearly, factually false. Remember this is the presenter who 2 weeks ago interrupted an audience member to WRONGLY assert Vote Leave hadn't broken the law. #bbcqt- Ally Fogg (@AllyFogg) November 22, 2019
So, the penny has just dropped. 95% of us are earning less than £80k. That's the highest salary most can expect. In a free market environment. Something is badly out of balance in the economy. #bbcqt@LBC- Sean Duggan (@SCDUGGAN7326) November 22, 2019
