Let's be frank, politics - and the world in general - is pretty depressing at the moment.

So kudos to the one person who decided to brighten up this week's political programming with a neat little trick on Question Time.

Amid all the arguing, shouting and increasing willpower to change the channel, you may have missed a subtle moment on last night's (January 26) episode.

As one audience member was giving her two cents on today's pressing topics, the joker behind her used the opportunity on camera to do the old 'severed thumb' trick.

Question Time's official Twitter account noticed the moment, and we thank the programme's social media team immensely as there's no way we'd have caught it.

However, they did call him out, tweeting: "Dear audience member in the background. We see your sneaky thumb trick. We do not encourage such behaviour. Goodnight!"

We'd round up the Twitter replies but trust us, you don't want to get involved. Suffice to say that this is the general consensus:

Despite the awful state of politics, the BBC panel show has come up with some great moments in recent months.

Most notably, writer Will Self called Nigel Farage and Donald Trump "grubby little opportunists riding the coattails of history". To top it off, Farage was also on the panel that night, so he got to say it to his face.

Question Time airs on Thursdays on BBC One.
