Time magazine has asked Donald Trump to remove fake covers from his golf clubhouses

Time magazine has asked Donald Trump to remove fake covers bearing his image from his golf clubhouses.

The Washington Post reported that a framed Time cover featuring the US president at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida was fake.

The cover, hanging on a door, refers to Mr Trump’s reality television show and bears the headline: ‘Donald Trump: The “Apprentice” is a television smash!’

Above the Time logo, the image has another piece of writing in capitals: ‘TRUMP IS HITTING ON ALL FRONTS… EVEN TV!’

It was reported that the fake Time cover, dated March 1, 2009, is on display at four other golf clubs owned by Mr Trump.

But the cover doesn’t exist – there was no Time magazine edition on that date, and on March 2, 2009, Time’s real cover featured actress Kate Winslet, fresh from winning an Oscar.

‘I can confirm that this is not a real Time cover,’ Time spokeswoman Kerri Chyka told The Washington Post.

It reported that Time has asked Mr Trump’s organisation to remove the covers from display.

The cover in the clubhouses has some subtle differences from a real Time front page – the red line in too thin and has no white outline, while Time rarely uses exclamation marks.

Mr Trump featured on the magazine’s cover only once before entering politics – in January 1989. He was last on the cover in December 2016.

The president’s spokeswoman, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, said: ‘We couldn’t comment on the decor at Trump Golf clubs one way or another.’

At the beginning of this year, Mr Trump claimed he held the record for Time cover appearances – the magazine later clarified that he had graced 11 covers compared to disgraced former US president Richard Nixon’s 55.
