Skywatchers in Los Angeles, California, were treated to a spectacular blue moon – an additional full moon that appears in a season – on Sunday, August 22.
Philip Lee filmed a timelapse video that shows the rare blue moon rising behind the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles.
According to space.com, a blue moon occurs when four full moons fall in a season or when a second full moon falls within a single calendar month. The moon only appears blue when “volcanic eruptions or forest fires send lots of smoke and fine dust into the atmosphere,” according to Sky & Telescope.
