Timelapse Shows Neowise Comet Moving Over Devon, England

Astronomer and astrophotographer Rob Tilsley captured this timelapse video of the Neowise comet streaking through space from his backyard in Buckfast, Devon.

News reports said the comet – which measures approximately three miles across – would be observable from earth, even to the naked eye, throughout July, and its closest approach would take place on July 22. The comet will not be visible again for approximately 6,800 years.

The comet was named Neowise after the NASA program that identified it, which is the “asteroid-hunting portion of the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) mission,” according to The NEOWISE Project website.

NEOWISE data have been used to set limits on the numbers, orbits, sizes, and probable compositions of asteroids throughout our solar system, and enabled the discovery of the first known Earth Trojan asteroid,” the website said. Credit: Rob Tilsley via Storyful
