Timelapse Shows Thick Smoke Plumes as New Mexico Records Largest Fire in State History

Thick smoke billowed in northern New Mexico as the state recorded its largest-ever wildfire, local media said on Monday, May 16.

This footage, captured by Jennifer Covelka, shows a timelapse of the smoke near her home in Arroyo Seco, Taos County, on Sunday.

The National Weather Service forecast red flag warnings to remain in place for the area until Monday night due to the threat of “dry lightning and sudden and erratic wind shifts” caused by nearby thunderstorms.

On Monday, the Calf Canyon/Hermits Peak fire burned 298,060 acres (465.7 sq miles) and was 27 percent contained, according to local fire reports. Credit: Jennifer Covelka via Storyful
